How much does it cost to keep a boat for a year?

Berth, insurance, antifouling, haul-out and the surprises nobody mentions: real costs by length around Barcelona, and how to cut them without neglecting the boat.

Annual maintenance work on a sailing boat in the boatyard

One of the most repeated sayings in marinas is that you buy a boat once but pay for it for the rest of your life. There is some truth in that. Annual maintenance has a real cost that many buyers do not work out properly before taking the plunge. This article tries to give concrete figures, not vague ranges.

The figures are for the Barcelona and Sitges area, for a second-hand sailing boat in good condition. An older boat, or one in worse shape, can double these numbers in years of heavy servicing.

Fixed costs: what you pay no matter what

Annual fixed costs — 10-metre sailing boat in Barcelona

  • Marina berth€2,400 – 5,000/year
  • Insurance (third party + basic hull)€600 – 1,200/year
  • Antifouling (every season)€700 – 1,200
  • Haul-out + yard days for painting€300 – 600
  • Fuel (moderate use)€400 – 800/year
  • Estimated total fixed costs€4,400 – 8,800/year

Variable costs: what turns up without warning

This is where most owners get a surprise. A boat more than ten years old has parts that age and fail: the engine belt, the impeller, the batteries, a sail that comes apart at the seams, an instrument that stops working. None of them is a catastrophic breakdown, but they add up.

Typical variable costs — 10-metre sailing boat

  • Engine maintenance (annual service)€200 – 500
  • Electrics: batteries, fuses, wiring€200 – 800
  • Sails: repairs or partial replacement€300 – 2,000
  • Rigging: inspection and occasional replacement€300 – 1,500
  • Electronics: repairs or upgrades€200 – 1,000
  • Consumables (lines, fenders, etc.)€200 – 500
  • Estimated total variable costs (normal year)€1,400 – 6,300

Table by length: estimated total cost

Total annual cost (fixed + average variable)

  • Up to 8 metres€3,000 – 6,000/year
  • 8 to 12 metres€5,000 – 12,000/year
  • 12 to 16 metres€10,000 – 22,000/year
  • Over 16 metres€20,000/year and up

* Boat in good condition, moderate use, Barcelona area. A neglected boat, or a year with a major overhaul, can double these figures.

The 6-10% rule

In boating people often talk about the “6-10% rule”: a boat’s annual maintenance usually costs between 6% and 10% of its market value. It is a useful if rough guide — a €50,000 boat in good condition can be kept for €3,000 a year if the owner is handy and nothing breaks; one in poor condition can eat up twice that.

What is certainly true is that deferred maintenance always costs more. Antifouling put off for a year can mean osmosis in the underwater hull. A battery that is not replaced can leave you without power in the middle of a passage. Preventive maintenance is always cheaper than repair.

How to cut the cost without neglecting the boat

There are things any owner can do without a technician: clean the engine filters, visually inspect the rigging, top up the batteries, check the fenders and lines. That basic level of maintenance costs nothing and prevents breakdowns.

For the rest — electronics, underwater hull, mechanics, painting — it makes sense to hand it to a professional who does the job right first time. A badly worked-out quote or a botched job always costs more in the medium term.
