Painting the hull is one of the most unavoidable jobs on a boat. It is not optional: without antifouling, the underwater hull becomes a breeding ground for algae, barnacles and mussels that slow the boat down, increase fuel use and can damage the fibreglass. The question is not whether to do it, but when and how much it costs.
What “painting the hull” involves
When we talk about painting the hull there are two quite distinct parts that are often confused:
Underwater hull (the part in the water): this gets the antifouling. It is the most frequent job — done every 1 or 2 years depending on how you sail and the product used.
Topsides (the part above the waterline): this gets a finishing paint. It deteriorates more slowly, but still needs regular attention to keep it looking good and to protect the fibreglass from UV.

Topside painting — approximate cost
- Up to 8 metres€600 – 1,000
- 8 to 12 metres€1,000 – 2,000
- 12 to 16 metres€2,000 – 4,000
* The price varies considerably depending on the condition of the surface and whether it needs preparation first (sanding, filling).
What drives the price
The condition of the surface. A clean, well-prepared hull is much cheaper to paint than one with osmosis, blisters or old layers of antifouling that have to be sanded off. Preparation can be 40-60% of the total cost.
The type of antifouling. High-end antifoulings (long-lasting self-polishing ones) cost more in materials but last 2-3 seasons. Cheaper ones have to be applied every year. In the long run, the cheap option is not always the most economical.
The number of coats. A job done properly usually needs two coats of antifouling. With just one you save a little money, but the result does not last as long.
The haul-out. The cost of lifting the boat out of the water and putting it on the hard is not usually included in the painting quote. Around Barcelona it ranges from €200 to €600 depending on length and time on the stands.
How often should you antifoul?
It depends on where and how much you sail. A boat that goes out every week in summer wears through its antifouling faster than one that goes out 10 times a year. As a general rule:
- Heavy use (more than 50 outings a year): antifoul every season
- Moderate use (10-50 outings a year): every 1-2 seasons
- Boat on a berth that rarely sails: every 2 seasons, but check it every year
The Mediterranean off Catalonia has moderate marine growth. It is not as aggressive as the Bay of Biscay or the Atlantic, but it cannot be neglected either.
Polishing: when it makes sense
Polishing the topsides and superstructure is not just cosmetic. Fibreglass gelcoat breaks down in UV light — it turns dull, loses its colour and becomes porous. A professional polish followed by waxing protects the surface and can put off the need to paint for several years.
Guide cost of polishing: €300-800 on an 8-12 metre boat, depending on its condition.
