ALTAIR NAUTICA
Whale & Dolphin Watching

Whale & Dolphin Watching

6-8 hour expedition from Port Garraf — Spain's top cetacean hotspot. Duration varies with sea state and group size.

Whale Watching Barcelona | Marine Expedition

We don't depart from Barcelona. We depart from Port Garraf, right in the heart of the cetacean corridor between Vilanova i la Geltrú and the Garraf headland — the highest-density fin whale zone in all of Spain. Barcelona-based operators sail for hours to reach these waters. We're already here. Escuela Náutica Altair is officially authorized by Spain's Ministry for Ecological Transition (MITECO) to conduct whale and dolphin watching legally and responsibly.

Our 6-8 hour expedition aboard sailboat BELA departs from Port Garraf at 8:00am. Duration is 6-8 hours depending on sea state and number of passengers. We sail approximately 30 miles, preferably under sail to stay in harmony with nature. You can book the expedition in two ways: private (the whole boat for your group) or shared (join other passengers on board).

Sailboat, not speedboat: we sail or motor slowly to avoid disturbing the animals' behaviour. The expedition departs from Port Garraf at 8:00am. Free outdoor parking (free in winter, metered in spring/summer) a 5-minute walk away, or paid parking inside the marina right in front of the boat.

The sea is nature, not a show

The sea is not a zoo or an aquarium. We cannot promise you will see a whale or a dolphin — they are wild animals moving at their own pace, not ours, and that is precisely what makes them magical. What we do guarantee is a full day of genuine nature in open Mediterranean waters. If the cetaceans don't show up, the sea gives you other gifts: migratory birds skimming across the bow, the low gliding flight of cormorants, flocks of Balearic shearwaters — a protected species found only in these waters —, yellow-legged gulls, gannets, terns. And always, always, the experience of sailing in the open sea: the silence of wind in the sails, the hull cutting through the blue. Sailing is the experience. Everything else is a bonus.

The route: the Garraf submarine canyons

The expedition departs from Port Garraf, in Sitges (30 minutes by car from Barcelona). We sail south into the deep waters between the Garraf coast and Vilanova i la Geltrú — a stretch of sea reaching depths of up to 800 metres. The Garraf submarine canyons generate nutrient-rich upwellings that concentrate euphausiids (Mediterranean krill): exactly what fin whales come for, from February to June. This coastal strip is a Site of Community Importance (SCI) and Special Protection Area (SPA) under the Natura 2000 network. Over 400 individual fin whales have been identified here by dorsal fin photo-ID, with more than 736 recorded sightings — 70 of them showing active feeding behaviour. Barcelona-based operators sail for hours to reach this zone. We're already here.

Biodiversity at its purest

During the crossing (about 30 miles in total) the skipper reads the sea. We look for the vertical blow of the fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus) — it can exceed 6 metres and is visible from kilometres away. Up to 24 metres long, over 70 tonnes, and endangered. The fin whale is identified by the pale chevron (a V-shape) behind the head and the white right jaw — a colouring asymmetry unique in the animal kingdom, evolved for its lateral lunge-feeding technique: it rolls onto its right side to engulf entire swarms of krill in a single strike. We also watch for the acrobatics of dolphins (bottlenose, striped and common), pilot whales, and if luck is on our side, a loggerhead turtle or a sunfish basking at the surface. The sky speaks too: Balearic shearwaters, cormorants, gannets, terns and gulls point us to where the food — and the action — is.

Tips for Your Expedition

Health & Seasickness

If you're prone to seasickness, take medication 30 min before. Avoid looking at your phone; fixing your gaze on the horizon is your best ally.

Dress in layers

At sea the temperature drops with the wind. Bring warm clothing (windbreaker or hoodie) even if it's hot on shore.

Footwear on board

Crocs, rubber-soled trainers or deck shoes are ideal for safety and comfort on board.

Sun Protection

The water reflection intensifies the sun. Essential: sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat.

Food & Drinks

It's a 6-8 hour trip with no catering. Bring enough water and easy food (sandwiches or a packed lunch).

Swimming stop

If conditions allow and you fancy it, a swim in the open sea is the best reward! Bring your swimwear.
