Anchoring without damaging posidonia

What posidonia is, why it is protected, how to spot sand from the boat and what alternatives there are for anchoring in the Mediterranean without tearing it up.

Arena Posidonia Fondea en arena, nunca en la pradera La posidonia tarda siglos en crecer

In Catalonia, the jewel of the seabed is Posidonia oceanica, a seagrass that acts as the lungs of the Mediterranean. 🌊 Anchoring on it not only damages the ecosystem, it also exposes you to fines! Sustainability is the skipper’s responsibility. 🌱

What is posidonia and why is it vital?

It is a seagrass endemic to the Mediterranean that produces oxygen, protects the coast from erosion and is home to thousands of species. It takes hundreds of years to grow.

The anchoring ban in Catalonia

  • Protected: posidonia is a protected habitat and anchoring on its meadows is prohibited. The Harbour Master and the Generalitat enforce this.
  • The map: there are public maps (sustainable anchoring apps) that show you where the posidonia is.

Sustainable anchoring alternatives

  • Sand or mud bottom: always choose the sandy patch to drop your anchor.
  • Eco-moorings: in many protected coves (especially on the Costa Brava), free or paid buoys have been installed so you can moor safely. Use them!
