In an inspection by the Harbour Master’s office (Capitanía Marítima) or the Guardia Civil, the documents must be up to date and on board. Sailing without your papers in order can be fined. Here is the list of essential documents every skipper should keep at the chart table.

Skipper’s documents (your nautical ID!)

  • Boating licence: the original or a certified copy (Navigation Licence, PNB or PER, or your recognised foreign licence).
  • Identity document: ID card or passport.

Boat documents

  • Navigation permit: the document that allows the boat to sail.
  • Certificate of seaworthiness: certifies that the boat meets the safety rules.
  • Registration sheet (hoja de asiento): the document with all the boat’s registry details.
  • Insurance policy and proof of payment: third-party liability insurance is compulsory.

Communications (if applicable)

Ship Station Licence (LEB): if you have a VHF radio.

Extra tip

Keep all the documents in a waterproof bag or box, near the chart table or the helm.
