The PER extension: 24 metres and the crossing to the Balearics

What the extension gives you, why there is no exam, what you learn in 24 hours of non-stop sailing and what crossing to the islands is like.

Want to book the extension? Dates, price and requirements are on the PER Balearic extension page. Here we explain how it works.

You already have the PER, but you want more! The extension lets you raise the maximum length to 24 metres and, most exciting of all, make the crossing to the Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Menorca, Ibiza). ⛵ Is it just a formality or the biggest adventure of your life as a skipper? We tell you. 🌊

The two big advantages of the extended PER

  • 24-metre length: you’ll be able to skipper bigger yachts, more stable and more comfortable for long passages.
  • Sailing between the mainland and the Balearics: the jump from 12 miles to an offshore passage (more than 60 miles between ports) is the jewel in the crown, and it only requires the additional practical training.

The requirement: practical training only, no extra exam

  • The extension does not require a new theory exam.
  • All you need is one additional 24-hour continuous practical (a navigation passage), sailed non-stop without calling at a port.

What do you learn in the 24-hour practical?

  • Night watches: you face real night sailing, reading other vessels’ lights in the dark and managing tiredness.
  • Full passage planning: fuel management, watch changes, weather and the use of offshore safety equipment (liferaft, long-range radio).

The Balearic crossing: a rite of passage

The practical becomes a real sailing experience. It is the most instructive and safest way to prepare for the step up to offshore sailing.
