What licence do you need to ride a jet ski in Spain?

There is no specific jet ski licence: the Spanish Navigation Licence is enough, by day and within 2 miles, or the PNB to go further. Age, beach rules and insurance.

Jet skis are pure adrenaline and fun on the Catalan coast. But the law is clear: you need a Spanish boating qualification to ride one. Forget about fines and find out the minimum licence you need to ride legally this summer.

There is no specific "jet ski licence"

Any Spanish recreational boating qualification (LN, PNB, PER) allows you to ride jet skis with no power limit (subject to the jet ski’s own approval).

The minimum qualification: the Navigation Licence (LN)

  • It is the quickest and cheapest option.
  • It lets you ride a jet ski, but limits you to 2 miles from a port or shelter and daytime only.

The PNB option: more freedom and safety

With the PNB you can go up to 5 miles from a port or shelter. That gives you more room to visit coves and, above all, to stay away from the busiest areas near the beach.

Key rules in Catalonia

  • Minimum age: 18, or 16 with parental consent.
  • Distances: you must keep 200 metres from the beach and follow the buoyage. Using the access channels is MANDATORY!
  • Insurance: third-party liability insurance is compulsory.
